Oasis, noun
- a small fertile or green area in a desert region, usually having a spring or well.
- something serving as a refuge, relief, or pleasant change from what is usual, annoying, difficult, etc. (thanks Dictionary.com)
If asked to define an “oasis”, the first thing most of us would picture is an island of lush, tropical greenery against a backdrop of harsh, blowing sand dunes. But an oasis can include much more, being any place that serves as a refuge from a difficult environment.
Oasis de San Miguel, the 13.5-acre property located just outside of San Miguel, is one of the few places in the world that can fit both definitions of the term.
Two American missionaries bought the land more than 20 years ago to be the home base for their orphanage which grew to provide much-needed love and support to many troubled children. As the number of children grew, there quickly came a need for a specialized school providing individualized education for these very special children.
With only 5 students, the school was opened and was housed in the school buildings and dormitories on site at Oasis de San Miguel. As the school grew, enrollment was opened to community members who could pay tuition, but the founders continued to offer scholarships to students who could not afford to attend.
Not only has the land provided an oasis of learning, support, and love to children once living in the “desert”, ironically it also is a geographic oasis. The property’s 8″ well accesses thermal spring waters just underneath the ground, providing mineral-rich, fresh water to the land. The location lies low in the region’s water table which waters the lush gardens and orchards for most of the year despite the region’s arid climate.
Thermal spring water has been used for centuries by people for its healing benefits. The mineral-rich water can treat a variety of medical conditions and is also safe (and healthy) to drink. A hot tub is located on-site next to the well and can be quickly filled with the land’s hot spring water for a relaxing evening under Mexico’s stars.
With such a beautiful history and complementing geographic environment, one question is left: in what way will this Oasis de San Miguel bless its next generation of tenants?
Oasis de San Miguel is a 14-acre countryside property for sale by owner outside the Spanish colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. With access to thermal springs, orchards and gardens, and historic ties, this property is the perfect investment for a school, resort, equestrian center, or retirement home.
